Messier First Drafts: ALL Your Ideas Belong Here
Is your first draft so bad you wouldn’t show it to your cat? Fantastic! You’re doing it right! The sloppier the first draft is, the better the finished draft.
Why? Because your brain is trying to protect you. It knows you want to write a good story, so it’s only letting the “good” ideas through. The problem with this is that so often your own personal writing genius resides in your OTHER ideas. The weird ones. The ones that you’ve never seen before, or the ones you’ve seen a hundred times, but never with your own awesome slant.
Even if the messy draft includes ideas you’ll never use, so often even those ideas lead to fabulous avenues you’d never have explored otherwise. In this workshop we’ll play with strange prompts that lead to the kinds of stories you’d never normally write. We’ll work with tools that circumvent that protective part of your brain. The solution isn’t to write “better”, it’s to write MESSIER.
You’ll leave this workshop with:
- Prompts that lead you in unexpected and new directions.
- Ways to circumvent the part of your brain that doesn’t want you to be messy.
- Story ideas and beginnings that include your wild and wonderful ideas.
About Sage Tyrtle
I’d been telling true stories on stage for ten years, all over the world. I’d taught workshops in India and spun tales in New York City. Won story slams, been on the radio, even on television. And when stages vanished in March of 2020 my life came to a screeching halt.
After a couple of months discovering that Napping Most Of The Day was not a positive career choice, my five year-old self came marching into my room and woke me up and said, “HEY. Remember how I said I was going to be a published writer? Okay, make it happen.
