Outside the Margin: on Ergodic Fiction

About This Training

When a book or text involves more presentation than just the written words, or when a reader is tasked with interpretation that does not account for the traditional concept of ‘reading,’ it belongs to a unique subset of literature known as “ergodic” fiction. In recent years, publishing has seen a surge in this alternative presentation, working with differing manifestations of text—from the use of footnotes and endnotes and marginalia to the actual physical orientation of the book itself. This class will explore what makes this technique a fascinating trend, present examples of this kind of literature (e.g., House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski and Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn, among others), and hopefully inspire the student to “think outside the page” with their own work.
