The Art of Short Stories

The Art of Short Story Writing

A presentation detailing key pieces of short story writing advice. The main topics covered include:

  • Point of view: Writing without a clear point of view is like hiking without a map – never start off without one.
  • Backstory: No one cares about your character’s backstory – it’s only important to you.
  • Conflict and stakes: What happens to your characters will not matter to the reader if there’s nothing at stake.
  • It’s OK to make mistakes: Write like nobody is reading. There are no rules in creative writing. Just guidelines and techniques.

This workshop will include some writing exercises.
